Emergency Care

We're here to help.

We provide a fully functioning hospital Emergency Department with dedicated attending providers and other staff. We serve both as an obstetric triage unit and as the point of hospital entry for all of our hospital patients. We additionally have a close working relationship with other local Emergency Departments to aid in patient care and facilitate non-Ob/Gyn transfers when needed.

We are staffed by Board Certified and Board Eligible Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Certified Nurse Midwives, and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioners, experts in the field of general obstetrics and gynecology who can provide a unique level of acute care for these services unlike in a traditional emergency setting.

When coming to the Emergency Department, you can expect to be cared for by Ob/Gyn nurses and staff, placed in rooms uniquely designed for these specialty services, and seen by one of our amazing women’s health providers.

The Emergency Department is led by the providers in the Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Division of Midwifery. Acute care and triage services are provided for low and high-risk obstetrics, general gynecology, urogynecology, and gynecologic oncology.

When You Arrive

When you first arrive, please sign in at the triage desk. You will be seen by the triage nurse who is specially trained in emergency care of women.

Registration

After seeing the triage nurse, you will meet with an admitting clerk. The clerk will ask you questions such as your address, telephone number, primary care doctor and insurance. This helps us to contact your doctor about your care.

Your Care in the Emergency Department

You will be seen as soon as possible. A team of doctors, midwives, nurse practitioners and nurses will care for you. During the busiest times, women with the most serious health problems are seen first. Others are asked to wait.

If you need blood work, x-rays or other tests, it may take an hour or more to get the results. We will do our best to get your results as quickly as possible. You may be asked to return to the waiting room during this time.

Parking for the Emergency Department

There is a paid parking lot behind the hospital. From Dudley Street, take a right onto Gay Street. Take your first right off Gay Street, then a left into the parking lot. Valet parking is available to patients who come to Women & Infants for diagnostic tests such as mammograms, ultrasounds, bone density tests, and blood work.

Valet parking is free of charge and is available between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Use the circular drive in front of Women & Infants' main entrance on 101 Dudley Street, Providence. Valet parking staff will park your cars and retrieve them up for you. If your test lasts beyond 5 p.m., your keys will be held by the Security staff near the Emergency Department entrance.
