What is the Specialty Care in Pregnancy Program (SCIPP)?

Coordinated by the Center for Obstetric and Consultative Medicine, the Women & Infants Hospital Specialty Care in Pregnancy Program (SCIPP) has two components: a weekly conference and a weekly patient clinic. Both are held on Fridays.

The weekly conference brings a multidisciplinary team together to consult on cases of women whose pregnancy, or plans for pregnancy, are complicated by a medical condition. The team discusses preconception counseling and recommends a plan of care for the patient's pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum period.

Each week, there is an area of focus: Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hematology, Pulmonology, or Rheumatology. Patients are discussed by obstetric medicine (OB Med) physicians, obstetricians, a specialist (e.g., cardiologist, hematologist, etc.), pharmacy, anesthesia, labor and delivery nurses, and other disciplines as needed.

Following the SCIPP conference, a small team comprised of an OB Med physician, OB Med fellow, a specialist, and a registered nurse, see SCIPP patients. At these visits care providers examine the patient, arrange for additional testing and follow-up, and share our recommendations for the plan of care with the patient.

A coordinated plan is developed in collaboration with the patient's referring health care provider.
